A Latin square of order n is an n-by-n grid filled with the numbers 1 through n such that every number appears exactly once in each row and column. (A standard Sudoku grid is an example of a Latin square of order 9.) This talk will provide an accessible introduction to Latin squares, tracing their historical origins, applications to experimental design, error-correcting codes, and group theory, and notable open problems.

John Hall, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics is the 2025 recipient of the Richard H. Brodhead ‘68 Prize for Teaching Excellence by instructional faculty.
