A Latin square of order n is an n-by-n grid filled with the numbers 1 through n such that every number appears exactly once in each row and column. (A standard Sudoku grid is an example of a Latin square of order 9.) This talk will provide an accessible introduction to Latin squares, tracing their historical origins, applications to experimental design, error-correcting codes, and group theory, and notable open problems.
